As iot solutions become more dynamic and comprehensive, so will the technology and device ecosystem. Here are five different layers of the iot pie:
 
edge
 
This is made up of devices, nodes and sensors that collect data and provide entry points to the network. These system endpoints simplify the flow of data between two or more networks. They interact and communicate with real-time data from smart products and services, and allow local data analysis. Local data analysis adds low latency and allows large amounts of data to be processed to avoid transmission to the cloud.
 
gateway
 
A gateway is a physical device or piece of software that allows data to flow from the edge to the platform. It improves network performance and response time by analyzing the data from the edge before transmission. The new generation of iot gateways are intelligent and able to filter out high-priority information from the data received and take action on it, for example, if the gateway detects that the temperature is too high, the gateway can send instructions to turn on the air conditioning.
 
Internet of things platform
 
The iot platform facilitates communication, data flow, device management and application functions. Smart device vendors and start-ups can use it to equip their products with remote control and real-time monitoring capabilities, configurable alerts and notifications, pluggable cloud services, and integration with consumer smartphones and other devices.
 
Application software
 
These are programs used by users to solve their business problems using data stored in the iot platform. There are thousands of disparate iot software development vendors, which is often a source of confusion for businesses looking to collaborate and build technology to fit their existing infrastructure.
 
Network security
 

This is an important category with significant challenges. It includes mechanisms to protect the edges, as well as data transmitted through gateways, platforms, and users. There are many threat vectors, such as authentication and authorization, software, device and network threats, and system vulnerabilities, which make security a major concern for innovation.
